There are many free "shopping cart" CGI scripts available for your use, I find this modification of web_store.cgi is the best for all-around efficiency, ease of use and flexibility. I have made numerous modifications which significantly improve the original in function, appearance and secure operation. Customization is easy; a simple search and replace can change the colors and the buttons can be just as easily replaced with those of your choosing. Standard HTML makes it easy to blend with your site. A telnet account for installation is not required.

This online shopping cart features a clean display, email order notification, multiple options such as gift wrapping, size and color options, and multiple shipping cost options. The Demo uses Shipping costs calculated on an incremental basis. Details regarding secure ordering, customizing, etc. are listed below.

It's easy to provide additional options for the sale of any product. Clothing sales requiring specific color selections and sizes are as easy to establish as writing a couple lines of HTML. The same applies for products available in differing styles etc. Additional costs can be included with options, you can charge an additional amount for a specific option. i.e., add $5.00 for an extra large and the additional cost is included in the calculation. It can also be used for adding insurance or UPS, FedEx shipping along with (or without) the incremental shipping.

Shipping Options
This script utilizes incremental shipping charges. It's easy to establish multiple levels of shipping charges based on the total sale. Optionally it can establish a flat rate shipping and handling charge if preferred. Shipping used in this demo are displayed on the left.

Sales Tax
Sales tax is easily established. This example taxes sales to residents of Minnesota (MN) an additional 6%.

Product Display
Products are displayed by category using a display that is appropriate for multiple products. It can just as easily display individual products or display HTML pages linking to the store script.

Real Time Processing - Secure Ordering
This does not perform real-time credit card authorization and payment. This is intended for businesses that already accept credit cards and phone orders who would like to add web shopping to their offerings. It adds the online presence and sends orders to the store owner via email. Unlike most other "shopping cart" scripts this one allows people to pay by means other than credit card which expands the customer base to include the people still uncomfortable with providing credit card information on the internet. To use this on a "secure site" simply place only the order form on your secure server or other secure options that are available. The easiest way to assure security is to turn off the email notification and read the orders from the secured log file.

Customizing Appearance
Customizing the store is as easy as changing the button images and making changes to three HTML files and two additional files that the store script uses. A simple search and replace of these six files can change the gold in the demo store to whatever you prefer. Add your own buttons and you have a whole new look. The store front and order form are straight HTML as are the header and footers. The table appearance can be just as easily changed. This can also easily be customized for non-U.S. sites using currency other than the dollar.
